Ceramics Philippines clay export exports earthenware

General:

Our workshop has an area of 300 square meters. Most of this space is sheltered. We have both our manufacturing and clay processing facilities located here, but intend to relocate the processing department outside the city to free up space. For this moment our business is truly a "backyard" industry since it is located beside our residence.

Products:

About 50 % of our products is made on the slab-table. This is labor intensive but gives freedom in design. The remainder is made by throwing (potter's wheel). A small part is made by extruder. We are not engaged in slip casting because it restricts artistic input. Our designs are all made by local workforce.

Safety:

We constantly experiment with glazes to enhance our designs. All our glazes are lead-less which means they can be used for tableware. From our workforce we require strict compliance with safety measures.

Clay:

Ball- and China-clays are sourced in Northern Panay island. From there they are delivered straight to our plant. The clays are then dried and mixed with feldspar and silica. We keep it in slurry form for about 2 months. Then we pugg it and let it age for another 6 months. It is specially the storage which takes up a lot of space forcing our processing plant to be relocated outside the city in the future.

Process:

Visitors familiar with ceramics can see on attached picture thrown bodies drying to be wadded. The black color is caused by its ball-clay content. The Iloilo ball clay consists of black organic material which will fire away when we bake it at 1090 degrees Celcius. The ultimate result is a white baking earthenware body.

Expertise:

Specially with regards to clay processing techniques we came a long way. Our mixing-, meshing- and grinding-facilities are designed with the "help" of failures and through bitter experience. The result is that now we are able to process and control its behavior. Understanding our material gives us an advantage over other ceramic workshops.
